There’s just something about summer.

The warm breeze, the golden light, the way everyone seems to breathe a little deeper and laugh a little louder. For families, summer often means slowing down just enough to soak in those moments you want to remember forever: the special nights staying up late night watching fireworks, the giggles as your kids run through the sprinkler on a hot day, the lazy afternoons sipping on fresh lemonade, and the messy faces after a delicious family barbecue. That’s why I truly believe summer is the best season for family photos.

As a family photographer based in Woodstock, Ontario, I’ve seen how the season brings out real joy, connection, and fun in every session. And as a mom? I’ve felt it.

Real-Life Magic: My Cottage Story

Last summer, I brought my own family up to the cottage for the first time and my kids had a BLAST! We went with my brother in-law's family, his wife's sister's family, and the grandmas - it was a packed house (especially with 8 kids!). I had brought my camera up to do a photo session for my sister in-law's family, but didn't think I'd have it out much more - until we got there.

There was a family of geese grazing on the grass, the adults were trying to fish at the water, the kids were running around laughing, and the wind picked up my daughter’s hair just right - I couldn’t not pull out my camera.

The weather was perfect (moody clouds and all), and instead of feeling pressure to “perform,” we just had fun. We explored, we laughed, and I captured the in-between - exactly how I love to photograph my clients.

It reminded me why summer sessions work so well:

The energy is different.

The pressure is lower.

The joy is real.

Why Families Love Summer Photo Sessions

1. Everyone’s in a better mood

School’s out, routines are relaxed, and work tends to ease up. The sunshine boosts everyone’s spirits, and it shows in the photos.

2. Longer days = more flexibility

The extra daylight means we can shoot later in the evening—hello, golden hour! That makes it easier to work around dinner, naps, and those unpredictable summer days.

3. New places make new memories

Summer invites adventure! Whether it's visiting a local creek, splashing barefoot in the water, or exploring a new trail together, family photo sessions feel more like a day out than an obligation.

My Creek Minis are a perfect example. We meet at a quiet, shady location with gentle water, and families play together while I capture it all. No posing, no pressure—just connection.

Coming later in the season, Sunflower Minis bring a different kind of magic. Tall blooms, glowing light, and the kind of joy that comes from chasing bees and squeezing your people close.

(If you’re reading this after they’ve passed—don’t worry. I offer them every year. You’ll want to be on the email list to grab a spot early!)

4. More room for fun!

Summer sessions aren’t limited to standing still and smiling (ew, boring!!). Let’s blow bubbles, bring a picnic, toss pebbles in the water, or run through a field. The best photos are the ones where your family forgets I’m even there.

5. Wardrobe is simpler (and prettier)

No jackets, no layering, no worrying about socks or snow pants! Just breezy dresses, rolled-up sleeves, and the sun warming your shoulders.
